Holy Bat Guana! After going through and reading the majority of comments, I can't help but wonder how many of you "Expats" are 'Orange man Bad' types. The only time I ever see such accusations of racism, finger-pointing, demeaning comments, and uncivil behavior is when watching MSM televising a Democratic affair of some sort. And to think I have been entertaining the thought of moving to Mexico to get away from that. Looks like I'm going to have to rethink those plans. I suggest you take a moment out of each day to contemplate on how you can better yourselves as loving, open-minded human beings instead of jumping on the ugly wagon every chance you get to make you feel superior about yourselves over others who might not think the same way you do. That kind of hive mind attitude is what opens the gates to Communism. Be very careful with that. Practice mindfulness and strive towards loving others more and respecting them who they are and if you are so adamantly opposed to their opinions, either walk away, not fueling a fire or suggest, kindly, another aspect or opinion for them to consider. Bashing people who don't align with your way of thinking will never work...unless you are Gestapo and beat people into submission. This world needs love and understanding more now than it ever has in our lifetime. Be the change you want to see...unless, of course, you are inherently, deep down inside, have Gestapo tendencies. In that case, go get therapy.

Wow! A lot of you are down right cruel and mean. You probably need a little less sugar and caffeine in your diets! Haha.. Someone made a comment about corn on here and it seems he was called a racist and banned. I didn't see his comment so don't really know, just seen the after comments. Maybe we jump on the racist bandwagon too often these days?! Corn is very unhealthy, especially the new strains being used in the commercial tortillas. Grains in general are used too much on a regular basis. Moderation and variety is the key. But some people can not afford the variety and are forced to over do the grains. That is the way it is and people's health will suffer, period.
As for you people calling others names and saying they shouldn't be in Mexico of kicked out etc. What is the purpose for all of this? Is it helping anyone? Is it setting a standard for the way a person will act to be accepted? I think it is just causing bad feelings. Relax! You came here to have a more relaxed and mellow life. Slow down and take a breath!
Jim - 4 years ago
It is a combination of many things that need to be done. Some say that the banning of celebrities will have no effect. Some say it will make a huge difference. Both are partially correct. OBVIOUSLY if the celebrities used in advertising didn't cause better sales of their products, they wouldn't be paying the big bucks for them. But education can be a partial help also. But that has a limited effect too. I am quite aware that eating many foods are unhealthy for me, but still I eat them. Why? Because I get a pleasure from them. They taste good. They increase my caffeine level and make my brain say "aaah".. There are so many reasons. For children, that are told everyday how unhealthy something is' to then to watch Spiderman consume it, advertising makes a huge difference. To me, it makes no difference who is advertising it, but to see a nice pile of coffee ice-cream being served makes me want some.
Not marketing unhealthy garbage to children would be a great start. Getting rid of the practice of filling all the stacks with sugar and carbs would be a great thing for the manufacturers to do. Even the unhealthy snacks could be made less unhealthy very easily. More sugary snacks have about twice as much sugar as would be pleasing to the consumer. But sugar is cheap and ADDICTING, the companies double up on purpose, one to make their products less expensive to make and two to get the consumer addicted to them. Caffeine is another ingredient that is added to many things that has nothing to do with the needed ingredient or the flavor and everything to do with making it addictive. MSG, addictive. Salt, addictive. All on purpose. Plus there are chemists working all the time on other chemicals and combinations that will addict the consumer.
One problem we face is that eating healthy is seen as some kind of fad, and fads can charge more money! So, we end up with very expensive healthy food and cheap unhealthy food. People can eat moderately healthy, fruits, vegetables, non red meats, fish like tuna and sardines, etc.. But these foods while basically healthy are also loaded with extras, like preservatives and hormones etc. To get those good foods without the bad stuff we are back to the healthy fad food.
There are two cures to the problem, without the government stepping in. The manufacturers can start caring about the health of the consumer, or the consumer can start caring about the health of themselves. Maybe a health rating system where every food item has a health rating and is taxed increasingly for increased unhealtyness. The taxes should go directly to a medical fund that pays for the number one killer, diet related diseases.

Richard Hollenback is now blaming the teachers?! What a moron! That may be in the mix of this topic, but it is far from the top of the list, you insipid elitist. There is no one to blame. Parents have it within their rights to feed their kids what they want. Mexico is no different than the USA in that regard. Get over yourself, HollenHack. You're a sheltered poodle barking up the wrong tree.
Richard Hollenback - 4 years ago
I totally agree with Jazmine, it all starts with education. For years pueblos have suffered because the government won't pay good teachers a proper wage. $ 8000 pesos a month? Don't blame the parents, they only have limited access to the same education. So this perpetuates the problem from generation to generation
Jazmine Vom Holzrand - 4 years ago
Talking about all of these characters and cartoons and their appeal to children points to the real issue. How is it that children are making the grocery buying decisions? Should that not be the exclusive purview of the adults? If children can tantrum their way into toxic cereals, that is a whole other problem that has nothing to do with marketing. Advertisers only do what works. Censoring the cheetah does not address the core issue.
This is most assuredly not a Mexico issue. The same advertising goes on in the US. Madison Avenue will quit using characters as soon as they stop being effective sales critters.
In Mexico, beautiful fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables are generally available and very inexpensive (compared to US prices which do include the costs of chemicals and pesticides). There are many ways to eat healthily that cost far less than processed rubbish.
The weak link in the chain is the adults who buy this garbage. Only parents and caregivers can make this stop. Ban the cheetah today, it’s the polar bear tomorrow and the cute little raccoon next week. We’re trying to solve the wrong problem.

I have neither been asked to apologize nor declined to do so. Corn based foods such as tamales and corn tortillas are acknowledged to be the prime cause of Mexico's well-documented obesity as is well publicized. The purpose, which I applaud, of restricting consumption of sweets and junk foods is to reduce obesity. I am at a loss to understand why pointing this out should raise eyebrows, much less hostile reaction.
